The 2024 Summer Solstice is the earliest in 226 years. This is one of the 4 major gateway dates in the year as the Cardinal season of Cancer begins as the Sun sits over the Tropic of Cancer and Winter begins in the Southern Hemisphere. It is the longest day of light in the year.The Sun appears to standstill for three days and it’s a maximum Major Standstill.
The Full Moon rises the next day on June 20, 2024, at its’ most extreme Southern point and will travel closest to the ground it ever gets,it will be opposite in the Southern hemisphere.
This phenomena is called a Lunistice, When the moon is the most northerly or southerly of the month. They are the lunar equivalent of solstices.

Litha is the pagan name for Solstice and our ancestors celebrated this turning of the wheel of the Year before time was measured. Litha is a time to celebrate abundance and the beauty of Mother Earth. Flowers are in bloom and gardens are producing fresh vegetables and fruits. Shakespeare wrote a famous play about it. Gathering family and friends to celebrate the longest day of the year and coming harvest season. Braid flowers in your hair are traditional. At Stonehenge, thousands of pagans and Druids will gather to welcome the SUN at its peak, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. It is a sacred gateway.
History of Litha
Midsummer Night is the longest day of the year and has been celebrated in some fashion since ancient times. In Pagan tradition, Litha marked the end of the Oak King’s reign and the rise of the Holly King, who oversees the world as the days gradually get shorter as the world descends into the cold dark of winter.
Like Beltane, celebrated on February 1st, the Sun’s powerful fire is the element of Litha. Bonfires were lit to help the Sun as it journeyed across the sky, standing still for 3 days then slowly changing course and gradually shortening the days into August and The Winter Solstice 6 months from now.
Litha also Celebrates the Celtic goddess Danu or Anu who represents earth and fruitfulness. According to Irish mythology, Danu was the Universal Mother of Tuatha De Danaan – a tribe of ancient people in Ireland believed to have invaded Ireland and ruled until being defeated in war on midsummer’s day, after which they retreated to the hills and eventually became the Faerie folk.
